vIs UV light beneficial or harmful to the humans?

Moderate amounts of UV light can promote mineral metabolism and vitamin D formation in humans body, which is beneficial to our health. But long-term exposure to UV light will cause damage to the skin. In addition, the destruction of the ozone layer led to a significant increase in skin diseases caused by excessive sunlight exposure worldwide. Sun protection has become a widespread concern, daily references to sun protection usually refer to protection against UVA and UVB wavelengths.

Sunscreen products are mostly made by adding physical and chemical sunscreens to achieve broad-spectrum UV protection, but physical sunscreens have weak protection and tend to clog pores, etc. High-safety chemical sunscreens are gradually becoming the first choice for high-end cosmetics.

 

vWhat kind of sunburn do UVA and UVB cause?

UVA is long-wave UV light (320-400nm). Its penetrating ability is strong and can reach the dermis, destroying collagen and elastic fibers, thus causing skin relaxation and aging and accelerating the formation of wrinkles. Moreover, long-wave UVB can motivate the formation of melanin, leading to skin pigmentation and inducing freckles/chloasma.

UVB is medium-wave UV light (290nm-320nm). Its short wavelength and strong photon energy will cause erythema, and long-term exposure will led to keratin-forming, rough skin and wrinkles. Medium-wave UV light causes a superficial sunburn, people will feel skin redness, burning and painful sensation of the skin.

 

vHow to evaluate the effectiveness of cosmetic sun protection?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

SPF represents the ability to protect against medium-wave UVB rays.  SPF is known as sun protection factor, is the assessment of UVB protection effect, or sun protection factor. When the SPF value of sunscreen <2, shall not mark the sunscreen effect; 2 ≤ SPF value ≤ 50, marking the actual value, the greater the value, the better the protection; SPF value > 50, uniformly marked as 50 +.

PA level (PFA value) 

PA level (PFA value) reflects the effectiveness of the product on the defense of UVA. When the measured PFA value of sunscreen <2, shall not identify the UVA protection effect; 2 ≤ PFA value <16, according to its value to identify the corresponding PA grade.
