The full English name of PFAS is Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, that is, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl compounds. PFAS is a series of synthetic organic fluorides, including PFOS, PFOA, PFNA and other compounds. Due to its special physical and chemical properties, it is often used to make daily necessities with anti-fouling, waterproof, anti-grease and other requirements. Because of its unique inertia, hydrophobicity and oleophobicity, and good slipperiness and pollution resistance, it is widely used in chemical, textile, paper and packaging materials, construction products and healthcare products and other industrial and consumer products. 

PFAS have different physical and chemical properties. They can be gas, liquid or solid high molecular weight polymers. They are sometimes described as long and short chains, as a way of grouping PFAS that behave similarly in the environment. PFAS are widely used because they have unique ideal characteristics; For example, they are stable at high temperatures. Many of them also have surfactant properties and functions as water and oil repellents. Some major industries that use PFAS include defense, automobile, aerospace, textiles, leather and apparel, construction and household products, electronics, fire protection, food processing and medical supplies. 

Another reason why PFAS have attracted widespread attention is that they are called harmful "permanent chemicals," meaning that once released into the environment, PFAS do not disappear easily, are environmentally persistent, long-distance migration and bioaccumulation. In particular, PFAS can accumulate in organisms and cause toxic effects, damage the reproductive system, affect fetal development, interfere with the human endocrine system, and even lead to cancer. 

In addition to the above harmful effects, the transmission route of PFAS pollution also deserves our attention. Studies from various countries have shown that dietary intake is the main route of human PFAS exposure, and PFAS pollution introduced by food contact materials is an important influencing factor. Obviously, the screening, protection and rational use of PFAS are particularly important!
