Automotive Nylon Engineering Plastic Modification

2024.06.13

Nylon engineering plastics(Abbreviation is PA), refers to the main chain of the molecule contains repeated amide groups(-NHCO-) thermoplastic resin general term. Nylon is one of the five major general engineering plastics, has a good overall performance, good mechanical properties, heat resistance, wear resistance, chemical resistance and easy processing characteristics. Its production capacity and consumption have long ranked first in engineering plastics.

With the development of new energy vehicles, the lightweight automotive body materials also put forward more and more high requirements. The nylon composites modified by glass fiber and other filler enhancement, the mechanical properties have been significantly improved, can fully meet the automotive market requirements. Automotive component is also the largest market for nylon material. Currently nylon is widely used in automotive hoods, air intake pipes, electrical components, body decorative parts and other fields.

When nylon is subjected to external conditions such as sunlight, high temperature, wind and rain, it will occur a series of aging phenomena such as fading, discoloration, cracking, chalking and loss of strength, etc., of which ultraviolet ray is the key factor in promoting aging. Weather-resistant nylon is mainly black products, that is, by adding carbon black and other UV-absorbing additives to nylon to improve its weatherability. However, in addition to black products, natural or light-colored nylon often faces the problem of aging in outdoor applications, which is mainly manifested as yellowing of the parts.

>> How to choose the right additives to further improve the quality of nylon composites?

Choosing the right UV absorber is very important to protect the material from UV degradation. Various polymers have different sensitivities to UV wavelengths, and nylon materials are very sensitive to UV wavelengths in the range of 290-315nm. Therefore, we should choose a UV absorber that has a strong absorption in the UVB band, and the absorption of such UV absorbers in the UVB band needs to be relatively concentrated, so that it will not affect the use of optical brightener in the formulation.

In the selection of antioxidants, we recommend the main antioxidant with excellent hydrolysis resistance and high temperature resistance, then compounding with phosphate antioxidants will further maximize the synergistic effect and provide long-term anti-aging protection.

>> OMNISTAB SOLUTIONS for Nylon Engineering Plastic

OMNISTAB UV234 is a general Benzotriazole UV absober, it could highly absorb the UVB band and suitable for high temperature processing conditions.

OMNISTAB UV312 can be applied to acidic plastic systems, and can be used simultaneously with optical brighteners without cross-influence.

OMNISTAB UV1577 belongs to triazine UV absorber, it has low volatility and high temperature resistance, suitable for nylon and other polyester materials.

OMNISTAB LS5519 is a multifunctional stabilizer for nylon, it could modify the processing of nylon melts and increases long-term thermal and light stability.

OMNISTAB AN1098 is commonly used as the main antioxidant in nylon systems.

OMNISTAB AN9228 is a macromolecular phosphite antioxidant with high phosphorus content (7.3%), and is recommended to be used in combination with AN1098.
