Light-colored plastic products are highly susceptible to yellowing and discoloration during production, processing, and usage, especially when exposed to light, heat, oxygen, chemical attack, or moisture. Yellowing not only affects the aesthetic appeal of the material, but also indicates significant changes in its structure and properties.
Yellowing is mainly caused by the following factors:
1. Impact of UV Radiation: When materials absorb light energy, conjugated double bonds may form or carbon-hydrogen bonds may cleave in the molecular chains at the absorption site, leading to yellowing.
2. Impact of Heat and Oxygen Molecules: As time goes on, materials undergo oxidation reactions. Heat accelerates the oxidation process, and after the formation of peroxide structures, free radicals are generated, resulting in discoloration.
3. Impact of Other Factors: Yellowing can also be influenced by additives, moisture, impurities, and production processes in the materials. These factors may reduce the stability of the material.
Omnistab® AO-80 is a high-temperature resistant asymmetric hindered phenol antioxidant. Compared to other hindered phenol antioxidants, AO-80 offers excellent thermal stability and does not cause phenolic yellowing or red discoloration. It provides long-lasting anti-thermal-oxidative aging protection, maintaining the initial color of the material and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the product during high-temperature processing and usage.
When Omnistab® AO-80 is used in combination with high-molecular-weight sulfur-based antioxidants, such as Omnistab® AN800 and Omnistab® AN802, it can provide even better heat aging resistance. Omnistab® AO-80 is suitable for most plastics, polyolefins, and various elastomers, particularly PE, PP, PA, PUR, and POM.
