Benzotriazole is a kind of high efficient UV absorber which have a good UV absorption effect in the range of 280-380nm. It has advantages of high melting point, low toxicity, oil resistance, color resistance, low volatility, good compatibility, etc. It can effectively extend the service life of the product, so it is widely used in all kinds of composite material and polymers, specially in the automotive coating .
However, plastic processing is generally working at higher temperatures (200-300℃). Benzotriazole UV absorber has a relatively low molecular weight. Thus, it is easy to reduce its protective effect due to surface migration and volatilization during the processing of polymer materials. Two molecules of UV329 were reacted with formaldehyde and secondary amine under the catalytic action of base to obtain UV360 . This kind of reaction is generally called Mannich reaction. At 200℃ the TGA of UV360 is 0.5% and at 300℃ that is 1.8%. Within the range of 200-300℃, UV360 has almost no thermal weight loss. UV360 has better light stability and thermal stability with the increase of molecular weight, and its absorption capacity does not decrease even under long-term exposure to sunlight. Its performance will not be affected by heat during processing and use.
Two strong absorption peaks in the 270-400nm ultraviolet region were shown by from the above spectrum. The two maximum absorption peaks are 306nm and 347nm. There are two benzotriazole groups that can absorb UV light in the structure of UV360, resulting in the production of two absorption peaks. At the same time, UV360 is a UV absorber with excellent performance, which has excellent transmittance in the visible light region(>400nm).
